Amanda’s Favorite Phone Apps

I’m spending more time on my phone than ever before, for better or worse, and so I love apps that are purely fun or make my life simpler. Here’s a list of my favorites.

Aside #1: I was lured by a huge Black Friday sale last year into getting a Droid. After two weeks of shaking my fist like an angry old lady at my phone, I was back to my iPhone.

Aside #2: I had my iPhone tucked into the left side of my shirt while I was shopping at Fairway last week and an old man told me that his doctor advised him not to keep his phone close to his heart. He was worried for my health. Cute! (Also: are you guys worried about this?)

Okay, here we go:

BE EFFICIENT!

Evernote. People told me about this app for years and I ignored their sage advice. I’m the kind of person who emails myself “to dos” when I’m on the go so that I can update my main to do list at home. Evernote allows you to have ONE to do list that you can access from your phone, home computer, or on the web, anytime, anywhere. The program syncs across all of your devices seamlessly. I can’t believe I didn’t start using this years ago!

READ ON THE RUN

Instapaper. If you’ve ever seen content on the web that you want to read later, on your phone, this is the app for you. When you see an article you want to read on the web, click “read later” in your browser and it shows up in this app. Magic!

Newsify. I read all of my favorite blogs and website on RSS, so I need an app that loads quickly, has intuitive scrolling, and is easy on the eyes. This app meets all of my RSS criteria.

CUT DISTRACTIONS

White Noise. Noise disrupts my sleep, so if I need to sleep away from home, I turn on this app and I’ve got my “silence”. This is also great for blocking out chatterboxes on the train or a plane.

Pandora. I’m a huge Pandora fan and I cultivate my stations carefully by using the thumbs up / down feature. As a result, I hear more music that I enjoy and less music that sucks. And did you know that you can listen to your friends’ stations? Here’s my Bon Jovi “Livin’ on a Prayer” Station.  (No, I’m not embarrassed. Okay, I’m 10% embarrassed.)

FIND YOUR WAY

City Transit. My favorite NYC subway app. It’s simple and accurate, perfect for when you can’t remember which of the yellow lines goes express and there’s a shady dude leaning on the map.

PURE ENTERTAINMENT

Guys, do you know that I’m secretly a gamer? I am addicted to my iphone games. It’s hard for me to choose a favorite, so I’ll give you a few here that I love:

Cut the Rope – challenging but entertaining
Angry Birds - obviously
Drop 7 – a delicious combination of sudoku and tetris
Touch Physics – a nerdy but fun way to play with physics
Tiny wings – I adore the design of this game
Peggle – like an arcade on your phone

Now, get off your phone and come to an event for some live FaceTime! Please go ahead and share some of your favorite apps on our Facebook page– I’m always looking for new ones!
